RAPID 4 WEEK DELIVERY: WRIGHTS OF TWYCROSS
- Faced with an urgent new client contract, Wrights of Twycross required a highly specified, premium crane truck within a strict four-week deadline.
- Mac’s Truck Sales utilised a ready-to-go stock chassis to supply a custom-finished Scania P500 Highline 8×2 rigid, mounted with a FASSI crane and heavy-duty cheesewedge body.
- The rapid turnaround provided Wrights of Twycross with a bespoke, ready-to-work vehicle that perfectly aligned with their fleet profile while ensuring maximum operator comfort and operational compliance.
THE STORY
Operating nationwide from Cornwall to Scotland, Wrights of Twycross boasts an expansive specialist operations division, running a 120-strong HGV fleet. To support a brand-new workstream, one of their clients required them to urgently procure a third specialist crane truck to handle a broad spectrum of work, including transporting containers, pipework, lifting gearboxes, holding tanks, and trackway panel matting.
Running a 75 per cent Scania fleet, the operator needed a premium vehicle that offered a balance of high payload and crane lifting power. Most critically, they needed it on the road within a one-month turnaround period.
RIGHT SPEC. RIGHT BUILD. Mac’s Truck Sales worked closely with the team at Wrights of Twycross to meet the tight deadline without compromising on their exact specifications. By utilising a premium built stock chassis, Mac’s delivered a vehicle that seamlessly integrated into the operator’s existing Scania fleet.
A key priority for Wrights of Twycross is driver welfare. Operating a strict “one-driver, one-truck” policy where operators spend eight to ten hours a day in the cab, the supplied Scania Highline sleeper cab featured premium entertainment, a fridge, microwave, and exterior LED lighting to ensure maximum comfort.
Additional features incorporated into the Mac’s-built bespoke truck include:
- A heavy-duty Mac’s Spec cheesewedge body offering a highly versatile 10-tonne payload.
- A FASSI F545RA.2.25 loader crane—the first FASSI to enter the Wrights of Twycross fleet.
- A VBG drawbar coupling, allowing for extra capacity when utilised.
- Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels, which saved a crucial 225kg in weight, featuring hub ends custom-painted to perfectly match the bodywork.
- Full Direct Vision Standard (DVS) 3 Star compliance, pre-equipped with a comprehensive 360-degree internal and external camera system for FORS Silver compliance.
- A full cab repaint in the operator’s distinct livery, along with the signature ‘PAW’ registration plate in tribute to founder P A Wright.
RESULTS. DELIVERED.
The new cheesewedge rigid is now on the road five to six days a week, handling demanding specialist loads nationwide.
“The turnaround time from initial order to delivery was impressive, particularly considering the number of additional extras and specific requirements we needed incorporating into the build,” says Brad Hunt, Operations Manager at Wrights of Twycross. “Peter Knowles was excellent throughout the process. Nothing was too much trouble, and communication was clear and proactive at every stage.”
To ensure a smooth transition to the company’s first FASSI crane, Mac’s Crane Engineer, Gabe Hall, provided market-leading handover training. To accommodate operator Lindsay, who previously used alternative crane brands, Hall reprogrammed the FASSI remote control to work from left to right, perfectly matching her existing muscle memory.
“On collection, the operator training provided was thorough and professionally delivered,” Hunt notes. “It gave our team complete confidence in both the vehicle and crane operation from day one, which is exactly what you want when introducing a new specialist asset into the fleet.”
Looking ahead, Wrights of Twycross sees the crane truck side of its business expanding significantly, with a goal to operate a fleet of 10 specialist crane vehicles by 2030.
“It has been a smooth, efficient transaction backed up by genuine aftersales support, right down to the tailored crane programming and the fact that we have a direct mobile number for a Mac’s crane technician whenever we need assistance,” Hunt adds. “We would have no hesitation in recommending Mac’s to anyone looking for quality vehicles and dependable service.”
