We Build Experience From the ground up
Most businesses try to hire their way out of this problem. They compete for the same small pool of experienced engineers, driving up costs without actually solving the root cause.
At Mac’s Truck Sales, we’ve learned that “ready-made” talent is a dwindling resource. If you only look for what is already there, you aren’t building for the future; you are just surviving the present.
The Experience Gap
You cannot simply wait for the right people to walk through the door anymore. The obstacle is the “Experience Gap”—the space between academic theory and the grit of a Huddersfield workshop.
“The only way to fix the skills shortage is to train the workforce. It’s the only way forward.”
— Andy Hall, Technical Director
The Solution: A Decade of Partnership with Kirklees College
We don’t just “take on” apprentices; we invest in them as the backbone of our 50-plus-year heritage. For over 10 years, we have partnered with Kirklees College to bring between 5 and 7 apprentices into our facility every single year.
These aren’t just extra sets of hands. These are young people with a genuine hunger for the trade who are trained the “Mac’s Way” from day one.
The Outcome: Engineering Certainty for the future
By teaching our specific standards from the start, we ensure our workforce understands the “why” behind every build:
- The “Mac’s” Standard: Apprentices learn why and how we work the way we do.
- Data-Driven Design: They see firsthand how data-driven analysis makes our trucks lighter and stronger through our KTP partnerships with Huddersfield University.
- A Bespoke problem-solving Mindset: They learn that there is no “one size fits all” in a Mac’s build, helping to find unique solutions for our customers’ problems.
The Proof: A Future-Ready Business
National Apprenticeship Week 2026 is a reminder that a business is only as strong as the people it is willing to grow. Many of our senior team members started exactly where these apprentices are today. They stayed because we provide more than a job—we provide a career path in a family-owned business that values honest relationships and local community support.
We aren’t just building trucks in Huddersfield. We’re building the next generation of British engineering.
